Genre 3: Interactions Through email
This series of e-mails encapsulate an interaction that could have taken place between various characters in Whale Talk in the fictitious school year that might follow the end of the novel. Had it been set in 2019 rather than 2001, email would have been a more viable method of communication between Mr. Simet and his various students, all of whom have undergone some kind of trauma in recent years. The specificity of Simet’s assignment as detailed in the first email allows the students at Cutter High School to share certain aspects of their identity that they deem important through musical and linguistic selections that they feel best represent them. The writing style and tone used in these interactions further allows insight into the characters’ differing mindsets and attitudes towards their own trauma-shaped identities.
